I HEARD WEB BROWSERS ARE DEAD. BUMMER

APPS INFLUENCE THE INTERNET MORE THAN A CELEBRITY TWITTER BATTLE ROYALE

Tim O’Reilly concedes that “the Web is the ‘adolescent’ phase of the Internet’s evolution and that we are seeing a shift toward a more closed phase in the networked age’s cycles”. What does that mean?  Apps.

Arguably, the Internet would be nothing without the first App – a browser from 1991 called WorldWideWeb. The origin to the average user’s net experience can be traced to 1993’s NCSA Mosaic. 1995 brought Netscape 2.0 and made “going online” a common phrase. Since then the Internet browsing experience has been upgraded, but relatively unchanged – click, click, click.

Then – Wham! Like a text message breakup: Handheld “smart” devices. The Internet started coming to the user. The interface has gone from searching to obtaining. The right App for the right job takes time and energy out of finding what you need. Directions? Google Maps. Hungry? Open Table. Music? Pandora. Want to own your digital identity? Facebook. Anything else? Amazon. The world wide web has been made available piece by piece by iPhone’s App Store and Android’s Market.

The Internet is so broad in its scope that it can not simply disappear. It is the universal tool in our modern age.  Surfing the ‘Net will never go away, we are merely changing how we navigate through its endless supply of websites, pop-up ads, and rickrolls. Humans are creatures of comfort and as the need for convenience emerges, so will the corresponding App.

Shot some footage with the Canon 7D over vacation. Cut up a couple shots I liked, tweaked with color correction in Apple Color and layed down a track. Viola! A Video Postcard. Enjoy.

AUDIENCE vs. ADVERTISING

SMSLINGSHOT TAKES DIGITAL AIM AT URBAN SCREENS

Interest in commercializing public spaces with new advertising techniques is growing, and now more than ever the role of the consumer is being relegated to simply that, a consumer.

con·sum·er [kuhn-soo-mer]
–noun
1. a person or thing that consumes.
2. Economics . a person or organization that uses a commodity or service.
3. Ecology . an organism, usually an animal, that feeds on plants or other animals.

Most companies do not engage their intended audience, they yell at them. Invading your television, skylines and even our precious Youtube videos! Hey David, is Goliath is bullying your area with marketing? Take action!

The goal of VR/URBAN is digital intervention activism through public media installations. Their SMSLINGSHOT allows the user to publish their own multimedia content in the streets by taking an ancient weapon and meshing it with a modern tool of convenience. The design is simple: a keypad, a digital projector and Dennis The Menace slinging action. Watch the video below to see everyday hipsters and squares creating colorful, modern day green media in a municipal space. Say hello to my little friend!

DIY: 3D AT HOME

eyeblog1

You Are Not James Cameron

With the success of “AVATAR” (and by success I mean it made A TON of money), the entertainment industry is trying to ride the hype right into your living room. On July 28th, Panasonic is set to unveil model number AG-3DA1 out of their home base in Tokyo, Japan. Come fall of 2010, this 3D-capable camcorder will be available for market.

It is not the first consumer friendly piece of 3D technology. Recently, some major electronics manufactures have pushed 3D televisions for home theater use. For maximum 3D-age, be prepared to drop some money on a new 3D Blu Ray player, with a whopping 18 titles to choose from!

3D at home? So far, the movie that kickstarted the recent craze took ten years to make and it is the only film that delivered a great 3D experience. As a director, working with this camera would be challenging and I imagine, rewarding. Not for the sake that it’s (movie guy voice) “IN 3D!”, but because how one can and should enhance the story by utilizing the in-camera technology. Whatever the footage, it better be worth it – the camera is listed at $20,000, although Panasonic assures a drop in price.

SMARTPHONE ACTIVATED BILLBOARD

eyeblog1

Calvin Klein’s ‘UNCENSORED’ challenges traditional static advertising.

Attention residents of Houston, L.A. and Chelsea! You are guinea pigs for some New Media adverts! Promotional videos for Calvin Klein’s fall/winter 2010 line have hit 4 select street locations that are only viewable if you have your smart phone and some wi-fi. The encrypted QR code is cracked after you take a picture, which in turn redirects you to a webpage, unlocking the ‘censored’ material.

How’s that for marketing? It’s like getting a prize in your cereal, “Here’s the ol’ standby billboard – NOW WITH FREE VIDEO!” They are only up until tomorrow 7/16/10, so if you are in the neighborhood and aren’t too busy using your phone to talk or text or updating your Facebook status – take a picture why dontcha?

HOW ONE COMPUTER MADE T.V. HISTORY

eyeblog1

Durning a power outage at “Jimmy Kimmel Live”, host Jimmy Kimmel uses his laptop to turn lemons into a television show.

The true hallmark of professionally produced media is that it shouldn’t look produced at all. Whether it’s a commercial, a music video, short film, even a block buster action flick: if it doesn’t look staged or scripted, the audience is more likely to enjoy it. Our brains are “turned off”, entertained by what it is experiencing. When there is novice camerawork, poor lighting and especially sound that is less than audible, it’s hard to not focus on the glaring errors and chalk it up to amateur producing.

Not so with tonights episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live”. Check out this article to see how Jimmy Kimmel, when faced with a huge production hurdle, shot an entire episode of his nationally aired television show using his MacBook Pro. And if you are reading this before his show airs on Tuesday, July 14, 2010 – tune in to see a television first! Check your local listings.

2 Cent Cinema

This Week’s Feature is another oldie – circa 2000-ish: QUITTING

This was a short film I made back in the day that focused on an issue that at the time was pressing for me – QUITTING SMOKING. Although I didn’t actually quite smoking until 2002, this film was my expression of the battle I endured on a day to day basis. With all my friends smoking like chimneys – my efforts were constantly halted by my weak will and the constant cigarette presence. So with my Sony 8mm and friends RYAN BARRY and JUSTIN NACKOUL – I set out to create this crazy short film. Also this film was one of the very first films I ever cut together with the help of friend ERIC WOLFINGER. After finishing this film I was bit by the editing bug and have loved it ever since. Hope you enjoy this out of control short and if you smoke – stop – it’s gross and makes your breath and clothes stink.:)
